How it works
Each question uses the same small table of 12 sales orders. Type your formula in cell J1 and press Check my answer. You can try again as often as you like.
Some tasks ask for a particular kind of function; lookups accept XLOOKUP, VLOOKUP or INDEX and MATCH, so the test works whichever Excel version you learned on.
Skip a question and come back to it with the numbered buttons. When you finish, or when the 15 minutes run out, you get your score, a level, and a review with one solution for every task.
Everything runs in your browser. Your answers are not sent anywhere; only your best score is remembered, in this browser.
How to read your score
| Score | Level | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 0–2 | Getting started | Learn cell references, SUM and AVERAGE first. |
| 3–4 | Beginner | Comfortable with basic formulas. |
| 5–6 | Intermediate | Everyday conditional counts and sums. |
| 7–8 | Advanced | Lookups and error handling too. |
| 9–10 | Expert | Ready for most formula tasks in a job test. |
Preparing for an Excel test in a job interview
Employers often send a timed test with a sample dataset. Formula questions like the ones here are the most common part, so practice them until you can type them without looking up the syntax.
Many tests also ask you to build a PivotTable, sort and filter a list, or make a chart. These aren't in this test, so practice them with the tutorials below.
Read each task twice. Most lost points come from using the wrong range, forgetting quotes around text, or a missing $ when a formula is copied.
Questions
Is the Excel test really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no email and no payment. The test and its solutions are free to use as often as you like.
Which Excel version does it follow?
It follows Microsoft 365. Where versions differ, the test accepts the older way too: VLOOKUP and INDEX with MATCH work for the lookup tasks, and RIGHT or MID works for the text task.
Can I use it to screen job candidates or with a class?
You can share the link with anyone. Each person sees their own score; nothing is collected or sent to you, so ask them to share the result screen.
How do I practice a question again?
In the review after the test, each task has a Practice this link that opens it in the Function Playground with the same data.
