ROUNDUP function playground
Always rounds a number up, away from zero.
The playground runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
How ROUNDUP works
ROUNDUP ignores the 5-or-more rule: any leftover amount, however small, pushes the number up. 2.01 rounded up to 0 digits is 3.
It is handy for things you can't buy part of, such as boxes or seats: if you need 2.1 boxes, you need 3.
Syntax
=ROUNDUP(number, num_digits)| Argument | What it means |
|---|---|
numberrequired | The number to round up. |
num_digitsrequired | Digits to keep. 0 = whole number, negative = to the left of the decimal point. |
Examples
| Formula | What it does | Result |
|---|---|---|
=ROUNDUP(D2,0) | Round the sale price up to a whole number. | 68 |
=ROUNDUP(D3,1) | Round up to one decimal place. | 36.4 |
=ROUNDUP(B6,-2) | Round up to the next hundred. | 200 |
=ROUNDUP(-2.1,0) | Negative numbers move away from zero: -3. | -3 |
Common mistakes
Negative numbersROUNDUP moves away from zero, so -2.1 becomes -3, not -2.
Expecting normal roundingUse ROUND if 2.1 should become 2.
