ROUND function playground
Rounds a number to a set number of digits, using normal rounding rules.
The playground runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
How ROUND works
ROUND looks at the first digit it will drop. If it is 5 or more, the kept digit goes up; otherwise it stays. Halves round away from zero, so 2.5 becomes 3 and -2.5 becomes -3.
Unlike changing the number format, ROUND changes the value itself, so later calculations use the rounded number. The sale prices in column D are calculated and have many decimals; try rounding them.
Syntax
=ROUND(number, num_digits)| Argument | What it means |
|---|---|
numberrequired | The number to round, often a cell or a calculation. |
num_digitsrequired | Digits to keep after the decimal point. 0 rounds to a whole number; -1 rounds to the nearest 10. |
Examples
| Formula | What it does | Result |

=ROUND(D2,0) | Round to a whole number. | 68 |
=ROUND(B6,-1) | Round to the nearest 10. | 190 |

Common mistakes
Formatting is not roundingShowing 2 decimals only hides digits; totals still use the full value. Use ROUND when the stored value matters.
Missing num_digitsExcel requires num_digits. Use 0 for whole numbers.
