Office Scripts & Power Automate awareness

VBA needs desktop Excel. Office Scripts run in the browser and in Power Automate flows — which matters the moment "run this every morning with no one at a keyboard" becomes the actual requirement.

Skill check

Try these first:

  • Explain when browser-based automation beats a desktop macro.
  • Describe what an Office Script can and can't do compared to VBA.
  • Name one connector or permission consideration before scheduling a flow.
  • Pick the least complex automation path that actually solves a given workflow.

What you're learning

When browser-based automation helps
No desktop Excel required, works against a file in OneDrive/SharePoint, and can run on a schedule with nobody logged in — VBA can't do any of that on its own.
Office Scripts basics
Recorded (like a macro) or hand-written in TypeScript, and run manually, on a schedule via Power Automate, or from a Power Automate flow triggered by an event.
Connector & permission considerations
A flow that touches Excel, email, and Teams needs each connector authorized, under an account that will still have access next year — not whoever happened to build it.
Scheduled workflows
Power Automate can run a flow nightly, weekly, or on a file-changed trigger — the same reliability a person forgetting to run a macro can't offer.
File location dependencies
Cloud automation needs the file somewhere it can reach it — OneDrive or SharePoint, not a laptop's local drive that's asleep at 2am.
Choosing a maintainable path
Formula → Power Query → VBA → Office Scripts/Power Automate, roughly in order of complexity — reach for the simplest one that actually solves the problem, not the most impressive one.

Where to find it in Excel

Swipe sideways to see the whole window.

  1. 1Automate tab (Excel for the web and Microsoft 365 business accounts with files in OneDrive or SharePoint).
  2. 2Record Actions writes a script while you work.
  3. 3New Script opens the Code Editor (TypeScript).
  4. 4Automate a Task connects a script to Power Automate, for example to run it on a schedule.
  5. 5Scripts run against the file in its cloud location, so moving the file breaks the flow.

Independent extension

Outline a real automation

Pick a weekly report you (or someone you know) saves and sends by hand. Outline the least complex automation that would replace it: the trigger, the steps, the connectors or permissions it needs, and where the file has to live for it to work.
